Comparison

Shams vs hiring an SDR

A sales development rep and an AI sales agent overlap on one job — answering inbound leads fast — and diverge on almost everything else. The comparison worth making is not which is better but which parts of the funnel each should own. We run both: the AI takes first response and qualification, and humans take the conversations that need a person.

SDR cost characteristics are described qualitatively; we have not published a salary estimate because it varies too widely by market to state as fact.

Where a human SDR wins

A person builds relationships, and in residential solar the relationship is often the sale. A good SDR hears hesitation in a voice, remembers the customer mentioned a new roof last spring, knows when to stop pitching, and can sit at a kitchen table. An AI does none of that. They exercise judgement on the cases that do not fit a pattern: the angry customer, the complicated ownership situation, the deal that needs an exception. They can be trained, corrected and promoted, and they carry knowledge no prompt encodes. If you can only fund one of the two, and your lead volume is low enough for one person to answer everything quickly, hire the person.

Who should choose hiring an SDR

Hire an SDR if your lead volume is modest enough that one person can respond in minutes, if your sales motion depends on relationship depth from first contact, or if you need someone who can visit customers.

Who should choose Sol AI

Add Shams if leads arrive faster than your team can answer them, if a meaningful share arrive outside business hours, or if you want first response and qualification to be identical at 2am on a Sunday and 10am on a Tuesday.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Can an AI sales agent replace a solar SDR entirely?

Not entirely, and we do not run it that way. In our own company the AI takes first response, qualification and proposal delivery, while humans take negotiation-heavy conversations, unusual situations and anything requiring judgement. 95% of conversations finish without a human typing. The remaining 5% is where the hard cases live.

Will an AI agent discount away my margin?

Only if it has permission to. Every outgoing message from Shams passes a pre-send guardrail layer: in a five-week sample it logged 1,630 interventions, rewrote 49% of messages before sending, and blocked 196 absolute price leaks and 21 premature discounts. The log is auditable, which is the only reason the claim is worth anything.
